Onam-Sadya

Onam' is a traditional annual harvest festival celebrated in Kerala. OnaSadya- a joyous event where people enjoys the festival with banquet (Sadya). It is a ten days of “food festival” where all family members unites and celebrate Onam with different kinds of games and song theme. And food is the main theme for this festival.

OnaSadya served on a plantain leaf.
The tapering end of the leaf should point towards the left side of the sitting person.
The serving of each curries has a distinct place on the leaf, as well as the curries following for rice also has a traditional sequence.

The water supplied in Sadya is usually "Pathimugham" or "Karingali". Pathimugham is light pink in colour and Karingali is light yellowish colour. Both are "Ayurvedik" and good for helth.

First all side dishes are served, the banana chips (upperi), sweet coated banana chips (sarkarapuratti), big papads, mango pickle, pachadi, thoran, koottu carry, injipuli (ginger curry) avial, one ripe yellow banana, followed by rice. Usually boiled rice (red rice) is served in sadya.

The side dishes are served in the upper half and the rice is in the lower half of the leaf. The sadya starts with Parippu curry and rice. Then Sambar and rice.
Next "Payasam" is served. There are different types of payasam (Payasam is a dessert). Mainly it may be - Pradhaman, Parippu payasam, Palada pradhaman, Palpayasam.
After the payasam once again rice will served with kalan or rasam followed by buttermilk and rice, which is the last.
